Volunteer Profile: Sue and Ron Ormston
About Sue:
“I first got involved with EPOC around 7 years ago, as we’ve had a number of cancer deaths in our family, including our daughter, and wanted to see if this was something we could help with. The most enjoyable part of my work as a volunteer is meeting people and talking to them. I feel that although there is more information on the TV, and the subject of cancer is more open and spoken about, it is so important that we speak to people face to face, especially as we all have our own experiences. I try and explain to people that we are raising awareness of cancers, as early diagnosis and treatment means that more cancers can be overcome and more people can lead normal lives. As a volunteer, I give out information on many types of cancers, from EPOC and the various cancer charities, and advise people to speak to their own GPs if they have any worries or concerns.”
About Ron:
“I first got involved with EPOC around 7 years ago, as we had a number of cancer deaths in our family, including our daughter, and we wanted to see if we could help. I enjoy meeting people and talking to them, and I feel that there is a need for someone to listen to the cares and concerns of people and I feel it is so important that we speak to people face to face, especially as we all have our own experiences.
As a volunteer, I give out information on many types of cancer, and listen to those who wish to talk about their experiences and fears. I do not give medical advice, but advise people to speak to their own GPs, if they have any worries or concerns. Together with other volunteers, I attend various events and meeting, and I also give out information in two regular locations in Lincoln:
• Tesco (Wragby Road, Lincoln), 10am – 1pm, every 2nd Thursday of the month
• Central Market (City Square, Lincoln), 8.30am – 3pm, first Friday of the month.
Come along and say hello!”
